The second edition of the Hong Kong Graduate Barometer is now up and running. The survey, conducted by trendence, Europe’s leading research institute that specialises in employer branding, personnel marketing and recruiting, strives to capture the opinions, views and demands of students, graduates and young professionals, unveiling findings with relevance to their preferences in employment as well as job-hunting priorities and habits.

As a survey participant, you will be asked to select the companies you would most like to work for, from a list of over 200 employers. If necessary, you can add additional companies that are not on our list and these may be considered for inclusion in our subsequent survey.

You will also be asked questions pertaining to your expected starting salary, ideal working hours and other pertinent characteristics that you look for when embarking on your job search. This information will provide valuable insights to prospective employers on the preferences and priorities of university graduates.

So let your voice be heard by voting for your favourite employer: https://www.trendence-survey.com/nq.cfm?q=af3f710d-b5d6-47a0-801f-3c3ae2b3b739

But hurry! The survey ends on 31 December 2011.

The hiring expectations of multi-national corporations across major Asian markets, though slightly lower than last quarter, remain strong, according to the just-released “The Hudson Report – Asia Q3 2011″.

The report surveyed more than 1,550 key employment decision makers in China (Beijing and Shanghai), Hong Kong and Singapore.

In Hong Kong, 61 percent of respondents plan to hire more staff in Q3, down from 69 percent in Q2. In China, 72 percent forecast headcount growth in Q3, compared with 77 percent in Q2.

Hong Kong is the only market in which cost control measures are seen as the most significant factor in a company’s performance. Across all sectors, 45 percent give this response while restructuring the organisation and better management practices are both mentioned by 37 percent of respondents.

The report also highlighted a worrying trend that it is not uncommon for managers to leave in their first year, although the figure for Hong Kong (38%) is much lower than that for China (65%). According to 50 percent of respondents in Hong Kong, the average tenure for managerial employees is over three years, a higher figure than for the other markets. Of these, 25 percent say that the average tenure is between three and four years and 25 percent say it is over four years. Job roles failing to meet expectations is the most common reason for managers leaving their position within their first year.

Wan Chai, 12 November 2010: International graduate careers and research firm GTI Media (GTI) announced the list of 100 most sought after employers at the Hong Kong’s 100 Leading Graduate Employers Awards 2010.

Global leading ICT company IBM China/ Hong Kong Ltd claimed the top spot in the overall rankings, followed by management consulting firm McKinsey & Company as first runner-up and accounting and professional services firm KPMG as second runner-up.

Rounding out the top ten were PricewaterhouseCoopers, The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited, South China Morning Post Publishers, Hong Kong Disneyland, Deloitte, Bloomberg L.P. and Morgan Stanley.

GTI also recognised industry leaders in eight specific sectors. Sector winners are as follows.

Banking & Financial Services

HSBC Global Banking and Markets

Trading, Transport & Logistics

Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd

Management Consulting & Accounting Services

McKinsey & Company

Engineering Services

Gammon Construction Ltd

Media, Communications & Creative services

South China Morning Post Publishers

Information & Communications Technology

IBM China / Hong Kong Ltd

Tourism & Hospitality

Hong Kong Disneyland

Property Management & Development

Swire Properties

The rankings are based on the Hong Kong Graduate Barometer 2010 which was conducted by GTI and powered by trendence, Europe’s leading employer branding, personnel marketing and recruiting research institute. In addition to determining the top 100 most sought after employers, the survey also explored the key factors that influenced the decision making process of penultimate and final year students when selecting their first employer after graduation, as well as their career aspirations and motivations. The survey was conducted over a period of five months and ended in September 2010.

The event received encouraging response from employers, students and fresh graduates. Nickie Yew, Regional Director of GTI said “We are thrilled to receive the support of so many employers, universities and students for the survey and we are confident that we will do even better next year.”

Michele Lam, Publishing Director of GTI said according to the survey, “Hong Kong students prize professional development/training and promotion opportunities most. Male respondents are attracted to employer success in the market, while female respondents prioritise work tasks and work-life balance over the product/services offered by their future employer.

The respondents also favour trainee programmes over direct entry positions and likewise considered long term earning potential to be more important than a high starting salary. All respondents set a lower priority on the workplace location and opportunities to work abroad.”

According to GTI founder and international managing director, Adrian Wood, the “benefit of a trendence research is that it allows organisations to understand the current perceptions of students to their company, their sector and the graduate employment market as a whole. They are able to benchmark their brand against named competitors.”

ANXIOUS WAIT FOR GRADUATE RECRUITERS!!

Wan Chai, 11 November 2010: Employers are waiting in anticipation to find out how their brands fare among young Hongkongers based on the first Hong Kong Graduate Barometer by international graduate careers and research company, GTI Media (GTI).

GTI will reveal Hong Kong’s 100 leading graduate employers 2010 in an exclusive awards ceremony at the Renaissance Harbour View Hotel on 12 November 2010. The awards ceremony will be held in conjunction with the ‘What Graduates Want’ seminar, where GTI will share key findings on the career aspirations and expectations of students and graduates.

According to GTI’s Regional Director, Nickie Yew, the awards not only celebrates the most sought-after employer brands in their respective sectors but also recognises the employers who put in the effort to make their organisation a desirable place to work in. ‘The Hong Kong’s 100 Leading Graduate Employers awards recognise the top graduate employers in Hong Kong whose recruitment campaigns have successfully left an impression in the minds of students and graduates,’ said Yew. ‘We also intend to continue providing employers with useful information on how students and graduates view them and on the career outlook of the younger generation to help them recruit and retain ambitious and commercially aware graduates.’

The event received strong support by CPA Australia (lead sponsor), KPMG (event sponsor) and John Swire & Sons (HK) Ltd (prize sponsor), and backed by the Hong Kong Institute of Human Resource Management (HKIHRM) and AIESEC. In addition to the Most Popular Graduate Employer, awards for employers who came up tops in their sector will also be presented. Awards will be given out to eight key sectors.

The Hong Kong Graduate Barometer is part of GTI’s ongoing research on graduate recruitment in Europe and Asia including countries such as Singapore, Malaysia and most recently Hong Kong. In addition to identifying the employers of choice of fresh graduates and penultimate and final year students, the survey also investigates key factors that affect students and graduates’ decisions when selecting their first employer. The data, collected over five months, was tabulated by Europe’s leading employer branding, personnel marketing and recruiting research institute, trendence.

Findings of the survey will be published in the Hong Kong’s 100 Leading Graduate Employers 2010 directory in the first quarter of 2011 and will be distributed for free at universities with high concentration of Hong Kong students both locally and abroad.

The Guardian UK300 is the biggest ever survey of UK employers and what students want from their graduate careers

Students are asked which career sectors interest them the most and which organisations within those sectors they most want to work for. Students name employers that feel relevant to their circumstances as opposed to recalling ‘big brands they’ve heard about’.

The survey is detailed: it ranks the 300 best employers AND the best employers within the 20 most popular graduate career sectors AND has ranked lists by gender and location.

The in-depth data analysis in the Guardian UK300 is based on a trendence survey of over 17,000 students conducted via the UK’s university careers services. It’s the largest and most representative survey of its kind.
